Man driving stolen car told police girlfriend was ready to deliver

Richard Saunders, 23, of 59 Winter St. in Somersworth, had been pulled over Jan. 14 on York Street at 9:10 p.m. for a defective taillight, according to Sgt. Brian Curtin.
Curtin said Saunders yelled out the window to officer Sgt. Gary Finley that he was rushing to the hospital because his pregnant girlfriend was going into labor.
Finley followed Saunders to York Hospital and ran the license plate of the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Saunders was operating.
“That revealed that it was a stolen vehicle out of Lee, N.H.,” said Curtin.
At the hospital, the woman was checked out by medical staff.
Saunders was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property and transported to the York police station, where he made bail and was released. Three small children who were also in the car, were released to Saunders’ custody.
Saunders’ girlfriend was released from the hospital later that night. Curtin said police did not believe she was pregnant.
